7. I find / would find a specialised cross-search service helpful:
|
Comments: "test comment"
"With VLE at such an infant stage I question the relevence in relation to other projects that coould"
"would be helpful to include publisher databases such as science direct journals"
"Quite a nice search engine - but I'm not sure what advanteage there is in having it embedded in Visi"
"the range of content is to varied. The specific electronic journals searches are more useful"
"May prove useful but I mostly use Vision outside of uni which means I would need to use Connectra to"
|
8. I am satisfied with the pilot cross-search speed:
|
Comments: "seemed a bit slow"
"Seemed to work fine!"
"Quite slow, search procedure/route unclear"
"Rather slow - but then your supply a lot of references"
"seemed to handle large number of items quikly"
"Far too slow and with no indication that it was actually searching - I thought it had crashed!"
|
9. The amount of information given in the results is appropriate for my needs:
|
Comments: "test comment"
"would be beneficial to include abstracts to know what the reference is exactly about"
"Needs full text indicators, plus more information about the cross-search itself."
"On the first screen, would be nice to have the choice of seeing some kind of ranking, or short text"
"I seemed to get whatever I would have got off Google + some possibly useful local information"
"Would appreciate date on sources. Also for students to tell them how or where they might obtain th"
"the content in terms of scope is ok the relevance and quality is more questioanble"
"Though it took a long time for this info to be displayed"
"Additional cross database choices (e.g ELS) need to be included for a wider range of search result."
"More is always better, but not if it makes the results page overwhelming - People won't bother with"

Further comments
 |
14. Any additional features you would like to see implemented in the pilot:- abstracts from references, to know what they are about
- The ability to share results between students (and staff), search each others results. Especially useful if users can add their own ranking and comment to the search results. In fact, being able to do this on any content in the VLE would be fab!
- see 15 below!
- Link to books on line being implemented else if source available
- Useful to have a 'search within results' field
Ability to use a 'NOT' operator
It would be useful to be able to see from the search results whether or not the full text of the document was actually available.
- refining listing to by date, relevance
- the ability to further refine the search criteria on the results of a search made
- Refine search function can be incorporated to include search by types (i.e books, journal, web), by category (i.e. life sciences, computing, engineering)
- the type and status of documents as well as the features which allow to borrow online
- Add as many libraries as possible.
- Advanced search that allows you to start a search which searches across user selectable resources (eg library catalogue only) so that you don't have to search and then go into a specific resource.
|
15. Positive aspects of cross searching library resources from the VLE:- The fac that you only have to log in once.
- allows a full search in one go rather then repeating task, also allows a search of all files specifically available in library.
- Its a one-stop destination for searching for information which is easy to use and saves on time
- Encourage use of (hopefully) reputable sources.
- Very fast and very clear summary of the number of hits from the different resources
- If it was easy to import selected results into the course material for students to subsequently access then that would be helpful. FOr library books it would be useful froma student point of view to click on the resource to check its availability.
- Enables searching across commonly used databases from within VISION
- Access from one portal.
- potential to save substantial time in constructing a useful VLE
It was useful to have the summary results bar to save a lot of reversing.
- this type of functionality linke to specific subject catalogues / journal groups would be good
- 1. gives the ability to search different resources at the same time
2. can be integrated to the other resources currently available in the vle
- It save time in performing reaseach of material available online (external sources and HWU internal sources)
- Can perform search within multiple sources
- You can get lots of results fast
- Would be useful if we have easy access to them with link and access information if any. Would be useful if includes popular other online information resources.
- That students have not to go to the website of each and every library and get results by simply loggin into vision which saves time.
- Quick and easy way to find most of the information I need.
|
16. Negative aspects of cross searching library resources from the VLE:- It has to be a tool giving more than the simple library catalogue
- Is not relevent to a wide range of students.
- layout is a little difficult to understand - needs to be clearer to navigate.
- Need to share ideas about how to use this to avoid a time 'blackhole'!
- I don't know if it is just to do with the pilot but for a number of results I got 'results' back from several resource. However, when I clicked on them to look at the references, I only got a blank line where the item should have been displayed.
That occurred in my case for hits from 'Interscience Journals' and 'IoP Journals' but I got something sensible from those resources for other searches....
- Web of Science (and others) is/are an 'industry standard' and either this should include WoS or at least make refernce to other databases.
- Students believe that this is the only way to find information.
- No serious issues
- will the students use it to cut in some easy references
the range of material is to wide. I would prefer students to search the electronic journal catalogues
- can't think of any
- It might miss out several relevant findings as the search are restricted to content available within VLE databases.
- the speed is very slow. For the Google search it cannot display the type of document plus the link at the bottom of each search. Number of Google search results should be returned
- Mixture books and articles in the results
- Not yet found any.
- Takes a while to find the correct term that will return my course information.
- Slow slow speed
|
17. General comments:- Some departments, such as SML, do not really use vision much. It is for this reason that the usefulness of this project is not really the same for all students. Taking to my collegues in other departments they seem to find it very useful, however personally it is hardly relevent at all.
- would be very helpful for literature searches, especially specific searches.
- Question 10 is ambiguous: "library resources (eg the catalogue and electronic journal services)" - what is meant by 'electronic journal services'?
Anomaly in results - e.g.
Results From: HW LibCatalogue - View all results
Displaying 1 to 2 of 2 records
- but only 1 result was displayed.
- It is not intuitive how useful I or my students would find this, but that is probably my lack of imagination - it 'feels' useful.
Speed impressive. Nice look to initial summary, but too brief for my liking.
- I guess at present I can't really see what advantage this offers the students. it's possible to cut and paste from most search engines.
One positive might be if it offers the designer an easy way to add/link to relevant references. i.e. a single button to take a reference link and add it to the course material - for subsequent student access.
- Although it would be useful to search within VISION the ability to re-use the results within VISION may be useful occasionally but is not of major importance for mathematics
- This seems like a very useful tool that could really help support the development of the VLE as something other than just a place to hang documents. I believe it should be extensively developed.
- It may be useful for student and staff
- very limited search results only useful for general topics.
- Its OK but still need some more efficiency in searching to provide adequate search results to students.
