Full Text Availability Indicators - Explanation

Establishing exactly whether digital resources are available to particular users is not always a straightforward task. To help provide an indication of the likely availability of resources, all collections cross-searched by this service are given Full Text Availability Indicators . These indicators use a ‘traffic light' metaphor to attempt to categorise the resource availability of included collections;

GREEN – Resource is freely available online in all, most or some cases.

AMBER – Resource may be available online.

RED – Resource is not available online.

GREY - Resource availability online is unknown.

Note that the indicators are provided only as an indicative guide and true availability is dependent upon a multitude of local and national factors.

A full breakdown of the indicators used is provided below;

Freely Available Online - Resource Availability Icon - Green - Freely Available Online
Collection provides full text of all, or most, resources freely available online. The vast majority of resources in this collection are freely available online to all.

Examples of collections which fall into this category include;

Partial Collection Freely Available Online - Resource Availability Icon - Green - Partial Collection Freely Available Online
Collection provides full text of a substantive part of its resources freely available online. Part of the collection may not be freely available online. Some of the collections which fall into this category are ‘catalogues' which describe third party resources. Although the majority of resources described in these ‘catalogues' are freely available online, some may point to resources which have access restrictions.

Examples of collections which fall into this category include;

Via Subscription/Pay Per View - Resource Availability Icon - Orange - Available Online Via Subscription/Pay Per View
Collection provides resources which are directly available online, but full text is only available via subscription or pay per view. Before paying for access it is advisable to check subscription status with your local institution.

Examples of collections which fall into this category include;

Not Directly Available Online - Resource Availability Icon - Red - Not Directly Available Online
Collection provides details of resources for which the full text is generally not directly available online. The resource may be available locally in hard copy, via interlibrary loan or via online purchasing.

Availablity Online Unknown - Resource Availability Icon - Grey - Availablity Online Unknown
Insufficient information is currently available from this collection to accurately gauge full text availability. Check availability with your local institution. The full text may be available locally in hard copy, via interlibrary loan or via online purchasing.
